Where/How are Embedded Images Stored? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello:

    I have searched for answers on this for the last hour and still don't have the full concept.

    When I create an email in Outlook 2010 and then "Insert a Picture" (Not Attach a File), the image shows up in the email as embedded and doesn't get downloaded from a Web Server URL.  The html code for this embedded image is:

    <img width=299 height=28 id="Picture_x0020_1" src="cid:image001.jpg@01CCC15C.D8F700C0" alt="Description: Description: Logicwurks_logo">

    It seems that the "cid" is referencing image data stored somewhere, but I can't tell where.  So, when I send this message to someone on Gmail or AOL, and they examine the mail source, all they see is the above html.  Where is the image actually stored?  Is it hidden within the email message but not shown, even when you look at the page source?  Or is it hidden on my email host and referenced with the cid?

    Regards,

  • It is stored as an attachment. The value of CID corresponds to the PR_ATTACHMENT_CONTENT_ID property set on the attachment.

    You can see it using OutlookSpy - click IMessage button.

  • Dmitry:

    So, you are saying that an embedded image sent from another system to my Outlook is actually encoded (i.e. MIME) and is actually shipped with the text portion of the message and stored on my local inbox in Outlook... correct?

    For AOL (web mail), apparently it is stored on AOL's server because here is a reference to an embedded image in my AOL inbox:

    http://mail.aol.com/35138-111/aol-6/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=30259000&folder=OldMail&partId=3

    Correct?

  • Dmitry:

    With your long list of achievements, I will trust your judgment on this.  I will review it when I am back in the office.

    Thanks!!!
