Unique Identifier for Windows Embedded OS RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am looking for a unique identifier in Windows Embedded OS that can be used to uniquely identify the PC.

I have across few things like Bios serial number etc for Windows 7, Windows 10. But I see that those values are empty in Windows Embedded Standard 7. In customised Windows Embedded Standard 7, looks like, it is upto the manufacturer to provide a valid value for serial number etc.

I would like to know if there are any other information similar to this? I came to know about Windows Product ID. Where will the Windows Product ID be stored in registry in WES7 and is that reliably unique?

  • In ICE there is the OEMInformation that can be put into the image. These values get stored in the registry. I think the WES7 license stickers have a bar code on them. You could have someone in manufacturing scan the barcode value into the OEMInformation->Model registry location. Or you could use a serial bar code that you create for your products.

  • Sean,

Can you mention the registry location that you are referring to?

  • Sean,

I checked the registry entry and it contains the OEM information like Manufacturer, Model, OEM website, OEM support hours etc. But there doesn't seem to be a unique identifier there.

  • Presuming that the system is generalized properly, the User SIDs should be different, simply look for the subkeys starting with "S-1-5-21" - they contain of following elements (delimited by dashes):

    Type RID System-ID Users-ID
    S-1-5 21 XXXXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXXXX X
Same Same Always unique My be same
