Cannot compile iOS Project since last update – Failed to load output manifest for ibtool RRS feed

  • Question

I installed a new version of Xamarin Tools on Tuesday and I get now a following error, when I compile my iOS project:

4>C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Xamarin\iOS\Xamarin.iOS.Common.targets(557,3): error : Failed to load output manifest for ibtool: Unrecognized property list format.
4>C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Xamarin\iOS\Xamarin.iOS.Common.targets(557,3): error : Output manifest contents:

Yesterday I installed the new Version 3.6.253, but the error is still present. After that, I uninstalled Xamarin from my Windows computer and installed it once again, updated and synchronized the iOS Version. The problem is the same. I must mention, that I can debug some very simple iOS projects, but not my big one. I sent 3 E-Mails to support, but I haven’t got any answer since 3 days.

I solved this Problem. The advice form Support to compile the solution on my Mac with Xamarin.Studio was helpfull. The error was the same like in Visual Studio, with some very important tip, that the ibtool exited with an error code 255. I searched for this error and found for instance this:

    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/15422033/why-am-i-getting-ibtool-failed-with-exit-code-255

The error by me was in the storyboard. I tried some earlier version of the file and it WORKS!!!! The ibtool from XCode has some bugs. If the designer produce a code, which it doesn’t like, it causes this error.

I've been getting this problem too, but haven't been able to solve it. I haven an iOS project which builds fine in Xamarin Studio on the mac, but when I use the build host in VS I get this problem. Has anyone encountered this when using the build host?

I am getting the same error.

Please add your voice to https://bugzilla.xamarin.com/show_bug.cgi?id=25551 so that it moves up the priority queue.

Have also had this issue today after copying and pasting a BaseViewController I created earlier. Did the renaming only on file level and class level, but forgot to rename the designer class which eventually led to this error...

After fixing this issue (which I did not notice on VS but did in Xamarin Studio), it worked on both IDE's. Concluding: this might be caused by a little error somewhere, not blocking, but big enough to trouble starting your app.

    Hope this helps!

In addition to my comment above: This issue is mostly related to an inconsistency in your designer file (for your xib or storyboard) and is only happening in Visual Studio (Xamarin Studio runs anyway).

The best way to fix this is to open up your project in Xamarin Studio on the mac, followed by opening the file in XCode. XCode will notify you of inconsistencies which have been fixed and will be resolved after saving the file. XCode will synchronize those changes to Xamarin Studio, fixing the issues you had. Now you're also able to launch from Visual Studio again.

The inconsistency of auto-generated files can be also solved checking if the default namespace of the project is correct.

I had the same error, the issue in my case was a new ViewController I added that was comment out. Deleting that ViewController solved it for me.

I had this error as well. I fixed it by doing a diff with my last stable build - there was a configuration file that seemed to have got screwed up. Sadly (and stupidly) I did not record which one, but it seemed to have a set of paths with windows style dividers followed a set of paths by using unix(apple) style divided. One set had been added since the last stable build - I wound back the changes and hey presto it started working again. I'd tried deleting the code on the phone and building on Xamarin Studio and none of them worked. So if you have a version in source control that works, trying diffing it with that and see what files have changed.

From looking at my project files I am pretty sure it was repositories.config that got screwed up - I tried manually editing the file to make it like I remembered (e.g two sets of paths with different naming conventions) but could not reproduce the error. Generally worth taking a look of a comparison to a previous checked-in version and the latest just to see if there is some kind of corruption like this though...

I too am seeing this error today.

My configuration is roughly this... * doing iOS work on Windows using Visual Studio * relying on iOS Build Host for compiling and simulating.

To resolve this issue for me, I had to actually clone my git repo into a completely different folder. (perhaps something is getting cached in the iOS Build Host chain?)

Had this issue today. A simple 'Clean' fixed it for me.

@JimCulverwell While I can confirm this also works for me most of the time, it's not always. And those times, it's usually something that's wrong in one of my Storyboards. But no indication whatsoever as to WHAT's wrong. And the designer shows it just fine.

In my case i think its something messed up with my storyboard. How do i find out where ibtool fails? Can i get more output?
