Running WebcamPipeServer.exe on a remote machine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to access a webcam on a remote machine, to offload image processing from a mobile laptop to a more powerful server. If I run the MSRS webcam service on the laptop and connect to it remotely over DSS I get about 1 frame/second. I was hoping that I could bypass several layers of code and instead connect directly to the named pipe provided by webcampipeserver. I hacked the webcam sample to do so, and it connects fine, enumerates the devices and starts the capture, but the frames never come. Running the entire stack entirely on the laptop works. Is this not a supported scenario? Are the sources to webcampipeserver available somewhere? Is there a better way to access a webcam remotely at a decent frame rate?

  • I do not recall off-hand if this is a directly supported scenario or not.  Have you tried RDS 2008 R3, it's free.  I don't recall off-hand if there were any webcampipeserver bugs fixed or not, but it might be worth a look?
