  • Dear Team,
    our environment it's large scale Presently we are using SQL2005 Enterprise edition with itanium based version it's working fine and our Database size is near 1TB and also we implemented MS clustering fail over and fail back it's working fine there is no problem ( HP bldde servers with HP SAN storage ) . Presently we bought MS windows server 2012R2 and MS SQL 2014 Enterprise core edition and also we implemented new Data center . here i have some doubts which one best option and healthy of data quality features . can we go through the migration option or can we do it backup and restore option  could you provide the best answer

    1. Download SQL 2014 Upgrade Advisor (by downloading SQL 2014 Feature Pack) and run it and it will apprise you of any issues that need to be rectified before/after the upgrade

    2. Download and peruse the SQL 2014 Upgrade Guide

    Since you got a new server, you have to implement a backup and restore option. However, since your DB size is 1TB, you can minimize the upgrade downtime window by using the following steps:

    1. To minimize downtime, you should backup and restore all the DBs from the old server to the new server in NORECOVERY mode prior to the upgrade  (make sure you don't have another full backup planned before the upgrade window)
    2. During the final migration window, stop the application on the old server
    3. Take a final differential backup of all DBs on the source server
    4. Apply the differentials from the source server to the destination server with RECOVERY
    5. After that, you can change connection strings/config files to point your application to the new server
