Image Editor does use QuickTime. I don't know why it isn't recognizing that QT is already on the machine, though. I'd suggest removing QT and reinstalling it.
One warning, though... I do not advise using Expression Media's Image Editor for any serious work for the following reasons:
1. You can't edit RAW files.
2. It's not non-destructive editing. Changes are stored to the original JPG or TIFF. There is versioning, but it's clumsy. Far better off editing in Capture One, Photoshop with layers, or Lightroom.
3. The tools are rudimentary. Your results aren't as good as they would be in a true image editor.
