  • The file to be deleted is ComponentModelCache

...just search it delete it...different versions would have different paths for it....

  • %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\12.0\ComponentModelCache, fixed my problem.

Thanks for proposing this solution. It saved lot of time and effort.

    What's the logic behind this??

  • I recently had this issue as well..however..contrary to whats posted above this did not fix the issue..Visual Studio 2013 with SP3..  the solution for me was to reinstall the SP3 from the iso image..

Removing the folder above and restarting VS only put the folder and it's defective contents back.

So if the above mentioned method doesn't fix your issue..try reinstalling the SP

  • I had the same error when opening Visual Studio 2015 with Update 3 and done the recommended fix proposed above and it worked perfectly:

    For Visual Studio 2015 it's:

    %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0\ComponentModelCache

  • Find location of "ComponentModelCache" folder on your PC and remove it.

Back it up first just in case!!!

  • Hi AirLee,

You can Removing or delete file: Microsoft.VisualStudio.Default.cache

    C:\Users\ %UserName%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0\ComponentModelCache\Microsoft.VisualStudio.Default.cache

and restarting Visual Studio fixed the problem for you.

  • Thanks, that fixed the problem.

Arise after a windows 10 update

    Thursday, November 16, 2017 10:11 AM
  • Same solution works with VS2013 removing %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\12.0\ComponentModelCache

When this error occurs, VS could not load any projects.  The error must happen if Windows gets restarted (e.g. due to a Windows Update) while VS is running.
