• Azure Storage account keys don't expire. In order to make them unusable, you just have to regenerate those keys. Once a key is regenerated, the old key automatically expires and becomes unusable.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi Sumanth,

Yup, Azure storage account keys wont expire , Our application was working fine with the same key from past 6 months.Suddenly stopped working and while troubleshooting got to know that the key is not working and once regenerated the key and with the new key started working fine without any issue.

Need to know the cause and also how to prevent this in future!

Could it be possible that someone else who has admin access in the project team, might have re-generated the key and the key got expired?

  • Azure Storage account keys don't expire. Regenerating your access keys can affect any applications or Azure services that are dependent on the storage account key. Without regenerating key won't expire

Has @Vibhav informed someone would have generated the key who has admin access

Your storage account access keys are similar to a root password for your storage account. Always be careful to protect your access keys. Use Azure Key Vault to manage and rotate your keys securely. Avoid distributing access keys to other users, hard-coding them, or saving them anywhere in plain text that is accessible to others. Rotate your keys if you believe they may have been compromised.

The key is auto-generated and serves as a password, rather than an as a cryptographic key.

When we create a storage account, Azure generates and assigns two 512-bit storage access keys to the account. These keys are required for authentication when accessing the storage account. Two access keys are generated, one is the primary access key and another is the secondary access key. Remember, these keys can be regenerated whenever required. When you generate a new key, the earlier ones are retired.

  • Hi Sumanth,

I knew the storage account key won't expire and I wonder how it was not working and checked all the activity logs on that day itself.

If someone regenerated then it will be caught in the logs and as I checked at the time of issue , the key was same in the portal and application.

Need other ways to find the cause.
