advice to resolve Azure DB server slow issue

    Question

  • Dear All,

I need to get the advice from you all to resolve to resolve Azure DB server slow issue??

Just to give you some background that we are developing an application in Azure using the “App Services”. The server environment that we are using is Linux+MySQL+PHP in Azure App Services (Under a BizSpark free account now). We found that all the while the server response is very slow and some further troubleshooting + online research told us that most likely this is due to bottleneck in MySQL connection(Microsoft outsourced this to another 3rd party SQL company). There are quite a lot of online discussion complaining about this, but so far we cannot find a clear resolution to it. (Upgrade from free account to premium will solve this? Further fine tuning needed? Others?)

    Thank you.

    Regards,

    Eng Teong

  • Hi Eng Teong,

Additionally you can select "Dedicated" as database type for ClearDB mySQL PaaS service and select a different Pricing tier to see if that helps.

  • Hi Eng Teong,

The performance relies on number of facts such as storage, VM instance size etc...

If this is a brand new VM for dev/test I suggest to refer below on performance optimization.

    https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/virtual-machines-sql-server-performance-best-practices/

If you  have specific IOPs requirement the new ARM deployment model allows you to pre-configure your SQL server IaaS instance with number of tweaks.

Can you provide more information on the "slowness"? Any particular delays that you have noticed and such?

Are there multiple VMs running in the storage account that is hosting the SQL server VM? What is the storage account type?

  • Hi Eng Teong,

There is a limitation of number of cores and etc.. between different Azure subscriptions (free, EA, Open) but I doubt that this is the case.

Is this MySQL image from ClearDB? If yes it is PaaS I believe. Have you tried MySQL in an Azure VM instead of ClearDB?
