Updating SQL Servers

  • Hello There,

I want to know if someone can help me with following:

    - What are the steps for Updating/Patching SQL Servers?

    - What impact will it have on the databases installed on that instance/server?

    - What are the prerequisites for Updating/Patching the SQL Servers?

Note: SQL Server Editions we have are 2005, 2008 and 2012.

  • Hello,

Best pratice is to backup first all databases to be on the safe side as prerequisition.
Then you can install the service pack as every other application/update.
In common it some bug fixes & improvements like better Performance as Impact.

  • 1. You can follow the practice for updating sql server from This Article, please note it is for standalone instance.

    2. You need to take application downtime for service pack upgrade or patching. Please test it on UAT instance before applying it on prod. If it is not creating issue on UAT it is most likely to not create issue on prod.

    3. Please refer to article in point 1
