  • Question

  • Hi All,

SQL 2012 is server product. We can install it on Windows 8 a client OS. what is the difference between installing SQL Server 2012 Standard on Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.

If there is no difference than there is no need to purchase Windows Server 2012 Licence because Windows 8 too much cheaper than Windows Server 2012.

    i am confused. Please help.

    Thanks for reply!

    Regards!

  • Hi,

The feature immediately comes in mind is Failover Clustering, if you want to use it you can't use windows 8. For more details you can use this link

From above link, Another feature which will not available is "When SQL Server 2012 is installed on a Windows 2012 operating system with hardware that supports bad memory diagnostics, you will notice new error messages like 854, 855, and 856 instead of the 832 errors that LazyWriter usually generates."

  • The SQL Server Books Online topic Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2012http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx has a section called Principal Editions of SQL Server 2012. It lists which editions of SQL Server can be installed on various versions of Windows.

And then might also need to view these two topics for information about which edition of SQL Server meets your needs:
