Database Mirroring Between SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it possible to configure Database Mirroring between SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008?  That is the originating database and server (the principal) is SQL Server 2005, and the receiving database and server (the mirror) is SQL Server 2008.

  • Hi SQLScript,

    According to the Books Online(BOL), we know that both the principal and mirror servers must use the same edition. So it is impossible to configure Database Mirroring between SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008.

            Since SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1), database mirroring partners and witnesses have been supported by Standard and Enterprise Edition. But the partners must use the same edition, and asynchronous database mirroring (high-performance mode) is supported only by Enterprise Edition. Witnesses are also supported by Workgroup Edition and Express Edition.

    If you have any more questions, please feel free to know.

  • Actually it is supported for upgrade scenarios, not production though.  See here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb677181.aspx

  • That is incorrect.

    It is true that the principal and mirror servers must use the same EDITION (standard vs enterprise), but not necessarily the same VERSION (2005 vs 2008).

    So, yes, you CAN mirror FROM SQL Server 2005 SP3 TO SQL Server 2008, as long as they are the same EDITION.  So:

    • SQL Svr 2005 SP3 STD -> SQL Svr 2008 STD = YES
    • SQL Svr 2005 SP3 ENT -> SQL Svr 2008 ENT = YES
    • SQL Svr 2005 SP3 STD -> SQL Svr 2008 ENT = NO

    Howeve, you CANNOT mirror FROM 2008 TO 2005.

    Hope that clears it up.
