Unattended Install from ICE IBW build RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm very new to WES7 and ICE, so please bare with me.  I'm trying to get my unattended install working from a flash drive.  It boots and starts the install but then it errors with this as the last part of the log file:

I've even tried searching for the exact string and can't find anything in the forums or Google.

I have my unattend.xml file wiping the fixed disk, creating a partition and modifying it.  From the log file it seems it's trying to create a virtual page file on the C:\ which is actually the flash drive.

    Any help is appreciated.

    1. Did you build the custom IBW disk from Answer file in ICE? Or are you creating an unattaned file and trying to use it with one of the IBW disks?
    2. Are you trying to install to a hard drive?

Rather than having the answer file create the partition start simpler and just get the image to install the packages and other settings. Manually set the partitioned when asked. If this works, then you can modify from there.

  • 1) I built the custom IBW from the answer file in ICE, copied the contents to USB flash drive, booted from flash drive

    2) Yes, I have a fixed disk that is "clean" (diskpart clean) that I expect the unattended install to partition depending on my answer file DiskConfiguration.

I've tried the basic answer file with the MS IBW disks and got it to work, it's just when I started doing more customizations for my needs that this has happened.

  • A little more information.

If I leave the fixed disk cleaned, the USB drive is assigned letter C: and WinPE tries to setup the Virtual Page File on that drive and I'm assuming it isn't sufficient of a drive to do this and then fails with the above error.

Now, if I create a partition on the fixed disk and format it NTFS then restart the setup.  It now gets passed the error above but the DiskConfiguration fails because it's trying to wipe the C:\ drive which is the fixed disk and it has been setup with the WinPE Virtual Page File so wiping it fails.  Below is now the error I'm on.

Setup now gets to the Window "Installing Windows..." but errors on:

Windows could not clean disk 0.  The target disk, partition, or volume does not support the specified operation.  The error occurred while applying the answer file's <DiskConfiguration> setting.  Error code: 0x80300024

See setup log files under [X:\Windows\panther] for details:

Going into diskpart and doing "list volume", Volume 0 which is the new partition on the fixed disk, Info column says "Pagefile" and it's letter is C.

How can I set IBW to change the Pagefile location for setup so it doesn't reserve drive C which is supposed to be the install drive and then fail?

  • It sounds like there is drive letter confusion with IBW. Is there a DVD or CD rom drive in the system?

  • No, there isn't an optical drive installed on the system.  Drives are fixed 300GB SATA drive, and the USB thumb drive trying to use for installation.

I've been working on it since I posted and I ended up removing the DiskConfiguration settings from the Answer file and then setup asks for choosing where to install and I choose the partition I manually created and then setup continues and installs fine.  If it's just the DiskConfiguration that is messing things up I can do without it because I have a separate WinPE image (With custom diskpart scripts) I will be using to apply the WIM to a drive once I have the WES7 image ready for final deployment.

  • I think I figured out the main problem with the page file.  I found a setting I had set a while back when I was just getting started and was still in there.

    Windows Embedded > Setup > PageFile > P1

I had that set to "C:\Pagefile.sys" so no matter what when setup would start, it would put a pagefile on the C:\ drive and then that drive couldn't be wiped, if I didn't have any partitions active setup would fail right from the start because it couldn't find a C:\ to put the pagefile on.

  • Ok that make sense. Most P1 settings are only for the WinPE image and not the main image. it gets a little confusing. Adding a page file for WinPE could complicate the setup.
