VM Backup Failure - 'Backup failed with an internal error' RRS feed

  • Question

  • From Pentru Craiova, @PentruCraiova  via Twitter:

When I try to backup my VM, there is an error message a few minutes after the backup started "Backup failed with an internal error - Please retry the operation in a few minutes. If the problem persists, contact Microsoft Support". I was retrying after few a days and the error persists. The original VM was not deleted, which is the second explanation for this error.

    Thanks,

    @AzureSupport

  • Hi,

    Thank you for contacting us!

Are you backing up a classic VM or an ARM VM?

What is the status of the VM on the portal?

Are you able to RDP into the VM?

    Refer to - https://azure.microsoft.com/en-in/documentation/articles/backup-azure-vms-troubleshoot/

  • Thank you very much for your first reply on mu message. It is a Classic VM, I am able to RDP in the VM but none of the two possible fix to error message "Backup failed with an internal error - Please retry the operation in a few minutes. If the problem persists, contact Microsoft Support" is real: it is not a transient error because I tried also after few days and the machine is working, was not deleted.

  • Hi Pentru,

Can you please go the “Jobs” within Monitoring and Reports section and click on “Backup Jobs”. Click on the “Export Jobs” button on the top ribbon and there will be an excel file downloaded.

Please share the screenshots of the activity pane and the excel file downloaded.

Mail to share the logs and screenshots to: masaran@microsoft.com

  • Hi Pentru,

Just adding to what Maanas mentioned,

If you are using a backup vault:

Go to Jobs tab and make sure that this job is present in the view(if not, adjust the filters) and click on "Export Jobs" at the bottom of the page.

If you are using a recovery services vault:

From vault dashboard , go to Settings > Backup Jobs > Click on Export Jobs ( make sure that job is visible in the blade).

Send the generated excel file to masaran@microsoft.com or You can also follow us @AzureBackup on twitter and message us directly there.
