PDF icon error messages and not displaying RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are having a heck of a time getting PDF icons to display in our WSS SharePoint sites.  I found a tutorial for our IT guy and he followed it.  But now we're getting X outs where the icon should appear.  And also, when you go to the page that's supposed to display the icon, it forces you to login first.  It's almost as if the server does not like the GIF file and is rejecting it for security reasons.

    The icon file, a GIF, is the perfect size and is an exact reproduction of the Word icon, except it's the PDF icon.

    Here is the tutorial I sent IT and they used:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832809

    Here is a screenshot of what it looks like with the icon X-ed out:  Any idea what the problem might be?  Thanks - Mike

  • Make sure that the icon is located in a location without access requirements.  (i.e. where anonymous can access it)  Putting it in the same directory as the existing working icons should be enough though (and that should be in the instructions you used).

  • Thanks for replying.  All links and code match exactly for the Word icon as well as the PDF, so it should work.  Here is the code for each image:

    /_layouts/images/icdoc.gif

    <IMG BORDER=0 ALT="4QBV17106601 Past Perf Questionnaire 12 DEC 10.doc" title="4QBV17106601 Past Perf Questionnaire 12 DEC 10.doc" SRC="/_layouts/images/icdoc.gif">

    /_layouts/images/pdfico.gif

    <IMG BORDER=0 ALT="4QBV17106601 Posting.pdf" title="4QBV17106601 Posting.pdf" SRC="/_layouts/images/pdfico.gif">

    Any other ideas?

  • Same idea. Check that the file with that exact name is really in the _layouts/images directory.

    Also check through all of this post (including the comment near the end about *which* server to install on) This post also indicates where on the server the _layouts/images directory actually is.
