Visual Studio 2015 Edition or Community?

  • Hi Alanda,

    1) While Visual Studio Express 2015 editions still exist, they are deprecated and Microsoft recommends to use Visual Studio 2015 Community Edition, here is the page of VS Express ("For most users we now recommend the free Visual Studio Community")

    https://www.visualstudio.com/vs/visual-studio-express/

    and a Microsoft blog:

Differences between Visual Studio Community Edition and Express Editions
    https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/onecode/2014/11/12/differences-between-visual-studio-community-edition-and-express-editions/

    2) Yes, the Community Edition allows source control with Team Foundation Server, Visual Studio Team Services (TFVC or Git) or any 3rd party version control thanks to support for plug-ins (on the contrary to the Express editions, which don't support plugins)

    3) About freeware/licensing, see my post:

Licensing the Visual Studio family of products (or using them for free)
    http://www.visualstudioresources.com/2017/01/06/licensing-the-visual-studio-family-of-products-or-using-them-for-free/

Take into account that the Community Edition has, for the most part, the same capabilities than the Professional Edition (except CodeLens, etc.), with restricted usage for "enterprise" organizations.

  • Thanks Carlos J. Quintero.

    Hi Alanda,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

I agreed with Carlos J. Quintero, you can have a look at those blogs.

    >>I have installed Visual Studio 2015 Community edition but didn't find SharePoint templates. Have to install Office Developer tool to install Office365 and SharePoint templates.

It is reasonable, the Microsoft Office Developer Tools is the custom component during the VS installation (for enterprise and professional version). It need to click the ‘Custom’ to customize this component to install it like the following screenshot we can know it from this document: Install Visual Studio 2015

BTW, if you think Carlos J. Quintero’s reply is helpful, please mark it as answer, that will help other community members who have the same or similar issue to easier search this information, thank you for your understanding.

    Best regards,

    Sara
