Disk space problems during installation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I tried to install my WES7 SP1 image on my target machine, but most of the installation attempts ended up with disk space problems.

    Attempt 1:

4 GB SD Card with two partitions.

    Disk 0 Partition 1: 3.5 GB

    Disk 0 Partition 2: 424.0 MB

Installation target: Disk 0 Partition 1

    Attempt 2:

4 GB SD Card and 2 GB DOM for some extra disk space.

    Disk 0 Partition 1: 1.9 GB

    Disk 1 Partition 1: 3.5 GB

    Disk 1 Partition 2: 424.0 MB

Installation target: Disk 1 Partition 1

    Attempt 3:

    8 GB SD Card.

    Disk 0 Partition 1: 4.0 GB

    Disk 0 Partition 2: 3.7 GB

Installation target: Disk 0 Partition 1

    Attempt 4:

    8 GB SD Card.

    Disk 0 Partition 1: 5.0 GB

    Disk 0 Partition 2: 2.7 GB

All partitons were created and formatted at the beginning of Windows Setup.

Only attempt 4 did not fail. Attempts 1-3 I ended with the following error message:

"Windows Setup failed to install packages or apply component settings while offline servicing the image. Not enough disk space available to complete the operation."

But I do not understand why there was not enough disk space during attempts 1-3, because the image is actually quite small and does not include much features. At the beginning of the installation Windows Setup says that the recommended free space for the installation is only 2721 MB. And after the succesfull installation in attempt 4 there was about 2.57 GB free disk space on the target partition (Disk 0 Partition 1; 5 GB).

That means that attemps 1-3 should have worked too, because the final system is clearly smaller than the target partitions and including all other partitions or disks there should have been enough free space for temporary files in all attempts.

Why does Windows Setup need so much free space during the installtion?

Is it possible that Windows Setup does not use other partitions or disks at all?

Is there a way to reduce the needed free space during installation?

    Thanks in advance!

  • The installer needs some working room to expand the CAB files. How big is the USB flash disk you are installing from?

  • You have 2 options.

    1. Offline Building (deploy with dism the xml file at some folder on your dev machine with dism than capture the folder/wim and deploy the new wim to your target.
    2. Add some other kind of disk temporary (USB, HDD (also external)) and run the setup manually with additional command (sources\setup.exe) temp:X:\ X: = Additional disk. Look at all options for setup.exe they may also can help you.

  • How big is the USB flash disk you are installing from?

My USB-Stick has a overall capacity of 3,72 GB. Only 977 MB are used by the installer, the free space is 2,77 GB.

Does the installer automatically use free space on the media you are installing from?

    1. How do you deploy an answer file with dism? I have never used dism before and in the dism help I could not find a command to create a image from an answer file.

    2. How can I disable the autostart of setup.exe?

Even if I rename AUTORUN.INF on my USB-Stick, setup is launched automatically and shows the license terms. The image on my USB-Stick was created with ICE using "Tools -> Create Media -> Create IBW Image From Answer File".

And why does setup.exe not recognize free disk space automatically?

In attempt 3 for example there was a free disk space of 3.7 GB on the second partition, but I think setup.exe used the first partition only because attempt 4 did work although there was less free disk space on the second partiton.

2 rename autounattend.xml to anything else - so setup will show the wizard. than hit Alt+F10 or was it Shift+F10 for console. - and run X:\sources\setup.exe /? for all parameters and than apply your rename autounattend.xml with /unattend:FILE.XML and /temp: and so on.

setup.exe in root is useless. the one in boot.wim will be used.

I tried the second possibility in two different ways, but both ways did not work.

    1. USB-Stick with installtion files as temporary drive:

In console my USB-Stick I am installing from could be accessed as drive C: because there were no partitons on the target drive. Therefore I used "setup.exe /tempdrive:c: /unattend:c:\answerfile.xml to start the installation, but if I tried to continue in the partition creation/selection screen after I have created the partitions I received the following error message:

"The specified drive [C:] cannot be found. Windows requires a valid drive to store temporary installation files. To install Windows, select another drive and restart the installation."

I have also tried to create the partitions on the target drive before launching setup.exe. In this case my USB-Stick could be accessed as drive E: in console, because I created two partitions on the target drive. But "setup.exe /tempdrive:e: /unattend:e:\answerfile.xml lead to the same error message as above with drive [E:] instead of [C:].

    2. Second USB-Stick as temporary drive:

Adding a second USB-Stick as temporary drive did not work, too. I tried to create the partitions on the target drive bevore launching setup.exe and I tried to create the partitons during installtion, but both lead to the following error message:

"Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information."

    Any ideas?

  • There could be many things wrong.

    1. see in the log (X:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log)
    (may post it here)

    2. remove all disk configurations from your answerfile and do it (for testing over the ui). while you trigger the installation with tempdrive
    X:\sources\setup.exe /tempdrive:T:\
If this works you know there is something wront in configuration in combination with your assigned letters your disk assignment (disk 0 - disk 1 and so on)

Assign T or anything non-standard letter to the tempdrive. - C: may can cause errors. E: should work but you never know. T is far behind auto-assign.

There are no disk configurations in my answer file. The partitions were created using diskpart or using the GUI during installation.

Now I used a clean target media and assigned drive letter T: to my installation media. Then I launched setup (setup.exe /tempdrive:t: /unattend:t:\answerfile.xml) and created two partitions using GUI on my target drive. After clicking on "Next" I received the same error message that I have received during my other tries:

"The specified drive [T:] cannot be found. Windows requires a valid drive to store temporary installation files. To install Windows, select another drive and restart the installation."

The log file is too big to post it completely, but I think these are the important parts of the file:

  • I can't look in my settings as I'm not running on my dev machine.

try: /tempdrive:t instead of /tempdrive:t:  (the : in the end)

and maybe this is also limited to hdd (fixed) drives like for autounattend.xml files which will only run automatically if it's located on some ufd. fixed drives are denied for auto install.

It seems that there is no difference between "t" and "t:", setup accepts both as parameters.

Adding a 4 GB DiskOnModule solved the problem that the installation cannot be started after the partition creation in setup GUI. It seems that tempdrive is really limited to fixed drives. This is a bit incomprehensible because if you can use a USB stick as installation media it should be possible to use it as temporary drive, too.

But the real problem is that the disk space problem is back again. After a while the installation stopped with the well-known error message:

"Windows Setup failed to install packages or apply component settings while offline servicing the image. Not enough disk space available to complete the operation."

I am a bit confused that a 4 GB SD card as target drive and a 4 GB DOM as temporary drive is still not enough, because in attempt 4 in my first posting I only used a 8 GB SD card with a 5 GB partition and a 2.7 GB partition. And since I did not provide any parameters to setup.exe in attempt 4 I assume that setup used the 5 GB partiton for installation and temporary files only and that attempt worked fine.

And I am not sure which drive caused the disk space problem. I tried 3 GB and 3.5 GB partition on the target device. This is a part of the log while using a 3.5 GB partition as target partition:

  • Hm...

As you're using an SD. Use offline building - It also should be a lot faster if you're running dism on a nice machine (disable anti virus realtime scans).

Windows Embedded Developer and Scripting Guy //Germany (Preparing a blog about Windows Embedded Standard)

I copied install.wim, AutoUnattend.xml and the AutoUnattend_Files folder to C:\TEMP on my developer machine. Afterwards I tried to perform the steps that are listed in the blog you mentioned above.

    >mkdir mount

    and

    >dism /mount-wim /wimfile:c:\temp\install.wim /index:1 /mountdir:c:\temp\mount

    worked fine, but

    >dism /image:c:\temp\mount /apply-unattend:c:\temp\AutoUnattend.xml

    stopped with "Error 3".

In the log file I found 2 errors:

    1.

    2013-01-31 09:11:00, Error                 DISM   DISM MSI Manager: PID=1404 Failed copying from c:\temp\mount\Windows\System32\Msi.dll to C:\Users\<myuser>\AppData\Local\Temp\CDC34076-1D67-44F7-896C-6DDCA80FB9F6\Msi.dll - CMsiApi::Initialize(hr:0x80070002)

The reason for this error seems to be that there is really no Msi.dll in c:\temp\mount\Windows\System32.

    2.

2013-01-31 09:11:00, Info                  DISM   DISM Package Manager: PID=1404 Attempting install from source location [%configsetroot%\AutoUnattend_Files\offlineServicing\x86~winemb-shell-core~~~~6.1.7601.17514~1.0\winemb-shell-core.cab]. It seems that the "Full path" is wrong. The files are in

    C:\TEMP\AutoUnattend_Files\offlineServicing

    and not in

    C:\Windows\ConfigSetRoot\AutoUnattend_Files\offlineServicing

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

I followed exactly the steps in the blog posting and the author creates and uses a configuration set in his guide. But I will try a normal answer file.

I have tried my answer file now, but the result is the same. DISM stops with "Error 3". It seems that DISM cannot resolve the answer file properly:

  • Have you tried using a new or different USB flash disk to install the image? Today, I had someone who ran into an issue - the WES7 installer kept saying that there was no drive to install the OS. After some tests, we used a USB flash disk that I used and the installer worked no problem.

I tried two different USB sticks, but both did not work.

But adding a hard disk seems to work. I added a 160 GB S-ATA hard disk and created a 16 GB partiton on it for temporary space. With this additional drive/partition setup could finish the installation without error messages on a 4 GB target drive with two partitions (3.5 GB and 424 MB). I assume that setup needs at least the size of the final image as temporary space.

But the offline building method in the blog mentioned by KNARZ still does not work.
