The operation was not completed because an unexpected host ID was encountered RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

I am only able to deploy/debug my JavaScript UWP approximately 3 times with Visual Studio (Release - Any CPU and deploy on Local Machine.). After this, I get the following error:

Activation for 77c7d7fc-ac18-4d93-aab3-c05ebe7de76d_wekztnmkwecqm!App failed. Error code: The operation was not completed because an unexpected host ID was encountered.. Activation phase: PLM prepare for activation

I set debugging in Visual Studio to "native mode", reset my developer license multiple times, but it does not seem to work. I also tried to clean/rebuild the solution, and then deploying it, but it does not help either. After a reboot of my PC, everything is OK again, and I still can deploy to my Windows Mobile VM...

  • Hi beste-spellen,

Welcome to the Developing Universal Windows apps forum! Please utilize tagging when posting to this forum, thanks!

I suggest you can create a blank project and try it again to check whether the issue will happen.

Besides, what's your project target version, the OS build and the Visual Studio Version?

    Best Regards,

    Yong Lu

  • Same issue. I can only debug once or twice before having to reboot the PC. I have rebuilt the solution from scratch with same results. I'm guessing there is a file handle stuck open between sessions.

  • Hi Yong,

In addition, the following "warning" is shown in the error list:

  • Hi all,

I've faced the same issue today. That was my first day developing under Spring Creators Update.

    Additional information:
    1. Uninstalling application does not help.
    2. Deploy without starting works.
    3. Starting an app without Visual Studio doesn't work. App tile doesn't respond on mouse clicks.

  • This issue is happening not only while debugging via VS but also if try running the standalone automation scripts to launch the UWP application (x86 arch) using protocol launcher..

The app goes into this state after some time when automated test runs for the app on desktop. Tests usually launches the app using the protocol launcher mechanism and verify some UI elements and then kill the app process. And similar test repeats..

Error observed in the event viewer:

Activation for xxxxxxx_xxx!App failed. Error code: The operation was not completed because an unexpected host ID was encountered.. Activation phase: PLM prepare for activation.

I started observing this issue from Windows 10 RS4 (1803). Anyone aware on this?? Really looking for solid fix..

Only workaround works is signout and sign in back and try OR restart the device and then try.

Uninstall and reinstall of app does not work as well.

  • Seems LOTS of people are hitting this, including me.  It's driving me crazy, the only work around I've found so far is annoyingly time consuming which is to reset the appx manifest certificates, but I have to do this over and over every time F10 fails with this error.   Reset the appx package certificate to a test certificate using Package.appxmanifest editor, Packaging tab, Choose Certificate, Create Test Certificate in the dropdown Configure Certiciate.  Unfortunately you have to keep doing this every time this error pops up, which seems to correlate to every time you kill the app in the debugger.
