    <g class="gr_ gr_103 gr-alert gr_tiny gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace" id="103" data-gr-id="103">i</g> have a database server setup '<g class="gr_ gr_161 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling" id="161" data-gr-id="161">iis</g>' with <g class="gr_ gr_201 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="201" data-gr-id="201">a SMTP</g> virtual server, we currently aren't using this but would like to? and whoever set it up is long gone. what does <g class="gr_ gr_360 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="360" data-gr-id="360">a '</g>SMTP virtual Server' actually <g class="gr_ gr_433 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace" id="433" data-gr-id="433">do ,</g> <g class="gr_ gr_459 gr-alert gr_tiny gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace" id="459" data-gr-id="459">i</g> can find all sort of info on how to set one up but nothing informing me why <g class="gr_ gr_645 gr-alert gr_tiny gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace" id="645" data-gr-id="645">i</g> would want to. is a virtual SMTP essentially just a Relay..? or something else..?

    Generally, SMTP server use for sending mail over server. and if you already access SMTP over iis then its ok if not, i am providing you one reference link so please visite and see all the topics you will get you answer properly

    You can install hMailServer  Thiredparty software.

    is a virtual SMTP essentially just a Relay..? or something else..?

    SMTP virtual server is a default server created when you install Microsoft SMTP Service to handle basic mail delivery functions.

    SMTP virtual server automatically configures default settings so that it can accept local client computer connections and process messages.

    SMTP virtual server actually means that you can email directly from your computer without having to relay through other websites. But only outward.
