Compatibility: Need Help: TFS 2010 / VS 2010 and TFS 2010 SP1 / VS 2010 SP1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

Can someone please provide answers to the following. I have put 2 cases and they have their relevant questions. Thanks a lot.

    Case

    =====

    A.    Currently our TFS instance is TFS 2008.

    Questions

    ---------------

    1.     Developers are using VS 2010 client. If they upgrade client to VS 2010 SP1, is VS 2010 SP1 upgrade compatible with TFS 2008. Is there any issue / hotfix for resolving that issue.

    B.    In near future, we are planning to migrate from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010 ??.

    Questions

    ---------------

     1.     Developers are using VS 2010 client. If we upgrade TFS from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010. Is VS 2010 compatible with TFS 2010 ?

    2.     Developers are using VS 2010 client. If we upgrade TFS from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010 SP1. Is VS 2010 compatible with TFS 2010 SP1 ?

    Or

    Should developers must upgrade to VS 2010 SP1 to access TFS 2010 SP1 i.e. TFS 2010 SP1 requires VS 2010 SP1.

    3.     Few developers have upgraded to VS 2010 SP1 and we upgrade to TFS 2010 (not SP1), then “Is VS 2010 SP1 client compatible with TFS 2010” ?

    4.     If we plan to migrate TFS 2008 to TFS 2010, then how easy / less impactive is to do the following:

    a.     Upgrade TFS 2010 to TFS 2010 SP1 at a later point in time.

    b.    Is there any data loss in doing this activity or do we need to prepare some database(s) from scratch

    c.     Does it requires an outage, how long?

    5.     If we plan to migrate from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010 SP1, then what’s the order of doing this activity i.e. where installation of TFS 2010 SP1 should take place?

Assuming in a test TFS 2010 environment:

    -       We have already installed / upgraded TFS 2008 (and its data) to TFS 2010.

    -       And now were are ready for doing a test run of “Unconfigure/Upgrade” again (with a more recent TFS 2008 live data).

  • Hi Arun,

    Thanks for your post.

    Case A  1: VS 2010 SP1 compatible with TFS 2008.

    Case B  1: VS 2010 compatible with TFS 2010.

                 2: VS 2010 compatible with TFS 2010 SP1.

                 3: VS 2010 SP1 compatible with TFS 2010 SP1.

4: I suggest to upgrade from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010 first, then install the TFS 2010 Service Pack 1.

  • A.1 There is a hotfix for viewing build reports in vs2010 sp1 against a tfs2008 server.

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/buckh/archive/2011/03/23/vs-2010-sp1-crashes-when-viewing-build-on-a-tfs-2008-server.aspx

    B.1 Yes

B.2 Yes, you can run VS2010 with TFS2010SP1, NO Tfs2010Sp1 DOESNT require Vs2010Sp1

    B.3 Yes

B.4  a Probably the easiest way

    B.4 b No

B.4 c The actuall TFS SP1 have taken about 1 hour to install, but may wary upon your config. You also need to add the time to secure/backup your system.

B 5 After the upgrade (install and config)
