Customize ribbon tabs from global template in Word 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi!

    1. I have a global template (dotm) with customUI element in it ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa338202(v=office.12).aspx ). So when Word 2010 starts, it loads my template (dotm) and users can see new ribbon tabs defined in the template.

    2. There is a new feature in Office 2010: users can do their own ribbon customization ( http://blogs.technet.com/b/office2010/archive/2009/11/09/making-the-ribbon-mine.aspx ).

Now my question. Why my ribbon tabs (from my global template) are not available for user customization? They are missing in "Main tabs" list in "Options" - "Customize ribbon" dialog. Is it possible to fix somehow template that would enable users to customize the ribbon from it?

But ribbon tabs from VSTO add-in (or COM add-in) are available for user customization (they are present in "Main tabs" list  in "Options" - "Customize ribbon" dialog).

    Thanks for your help.

  • I've been under the impression that this is not possible to allow an end-user the ability to tailor your custom ribbon tab, at least not in the same way as they can modify built-in Word tabs.

What I know you can do is to build out your custom tab with all the available options and then programmatically show or hide them based on some criteria that you and the end-user can control.

  • We deploy template manually, by copying it in Word startup folder in client computers. Our previous solution works under Word 2003. There are Command Bars, that user can customize. So we expect the same behavior in the Word 2010 with ribbon.

Here are some screenshots. This is ribbon tab from sample VSTO Add-in, that is available for customization:

Ribbon tab from VSTO add-in is available for customization

    Tab from sample template:

Word is working properly except the customization behavior.

The question is whether this behavior is by design? Or is there any solution which allows users to customize ribbon from global template?
