AJAX Control 6.3 affected by sundown? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Will the AJAX control V 6.3 be affected by the MapPoints sundown?

What is the estimated life left on 6.3 now that 7.0 is out and completely revamped the API? We have some apps now being converted to the Keys mechanism, but I wonder if we would need another recoding in the next 6 months.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Just to confirm the shutdown of MapPoint will not effect the Bing Maps v6.3 map control. MapPoint was shut down months ago. At the end of this month the Token service is being taken down. If you are using tokens in your v6.3 application then you will need to switch this over to keys otherwise your app with throw an invalid credentials error. Information on how to migrate over can be found here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg197514.aspx

Not quite sure what you're talking about here. Can you elaborate more?

No official end-of-life has been announced for v6.3. However, it would be wise to consider upgrading to 7.0 soon, and certainly do not undertake any new development work using v6.3. And yes, you're right in saying that upgrading to v7 does require a complete re-code - it's not simply updating a few isolated lines of code.

You might notice that v6.x supports a range of older browsers (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc161075.aspx) while v7.0 supports newer browsers (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg427618.aspx)... if I was to suggest a point out which v6.3 will be turned off, it will occur when a critical mass of users have migrated off the older browsers that only longer work with v6.3, or, are using browsers such as Android/iOS that are only supported on v7.0. As to exactly when that point will occur - your guess is as good as anyone elses.

  • And, to be really clear: MapPoint is still very much alive and well. It's the MapPoint Web Services that were shut down.

But neither of these affect Bing Maps v6.3...
