Reading registry returns different value than I see in regedit. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I write the latest install version number to hklm when my app is installed.  I can see the value in regedit, in the correct key, but it is an old value from a couple of installs ago.  In other words, it doesn't appear to "take".  When my app runs, it reads this key but returns a more recent value.  Where is it getting this value? It's as if there is a registry mirrored somewhere and regedit can't see it.

  • If you aren't running elevated you can't write to HKLM and so the registry write will have been virtualised and written to a subkey of the current user's profile by the application compatability functionality.

You can find these keys located under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\VirtualStore
