app for outlook 2013 does not run when email is digitally signed RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have an Mail App for Outlook 2013 that allows the user to upload the email and its attachments to our line of business application. It works great. We also make heavy use other mail apps for Outlook like the LinkedIn app.

One of our clients sends digitally signed emails.  When we receive such an email no Apps for Outlook activate, let alone ours.

Why is this? Can we get around it?  Is the behaviour documented anywhere?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Dave,

Do you know what your client is using to digitally sign the message? Is it S/MIME or Digital Rights Management(DRM) through Outlook or are they using 3rd party product?

Since mail apps can gain access to message content they will not activate on messages where S/MIME or DRM through Outlook has been used.  This is a security precaution we've put in place because users often use S/MIME or DRM to prevent the recipients from sharing the message content.
