MDS with SAP RRS feed

  • Question

  • I read in the "Introduction to Master Data Services" whitepaper that "There is no pre-defined structure for entering product or customers, although industry-standard models can be loaded using the model deployment feature and can be further customized after loading."

We are considering using MDS as part of a new SAP installation.

Are there any "canned" industry standard models out there (an SAP-oriented one would be even better) or has anyone tried to use MDS for their Enterprise master data (with or without) SAP as one of their main systems?  Or do these models need to be developed from scratch.

    Thanks,

    Dave

  • There a few projects going on at the moment :D

I don't believe that there are ready-made models for MDS which are based on SAP structures. If you are already investing in an SAP implementation, creating a model would not be the problem :D There is at least one tool in Codeplex which you can use to speed up model creation based on metadata.

The real challenges are in other fields. For example, integration: how to distribute data from MDS to other systems, and vice-versa. In particular because you'll need to build these from scratch. Another example, capacity and performance.

I hope you can get more insights from others, perhaps even Microsoft?

From my experience, using MDS for analytical purposes (managing dimensions and mappings for reporting systems) is the simplest and quickest use case to be implemented.
