Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio Team System 2008 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

I'm part of a company that has a relatively small development department. Currently, we're doing our development in Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. Recently, we've been trying to reorganize our processes to be more efficient, and this includes our development procedures. Currently, we're looking to acquire a new source control system and I've been trying to read everything I can about the Visual Studio Team System 2008. Unfortunately, the documentation of VSTS2008 interacting with VS2005 has been rather sparse. I've found two mentions that VS2005 development can get along with VSTS2008, but it's hardly the rousing consensus I was looking for, and additional information was not forthcoming.

Would anyone know if we'd be able to implement Team System 2008 while being able to continue development in Visual Studio 2005? Would there be any hang-ups that we'd have to watch out for or patch through? Is there a particular flavor of Team System 2008 I should key in on? Our preference would be to proceed with the latest and greatest, if possible, but we want to make sure that whatever system we go with integrates with our current development environment (we may wind up proceeding to VS2008 in the future, but it's clear that VS2005 and VS2008 would mostly get along).

    Thanks in advance.

  • Most of the features of TFS 2008 will work with Visual Studio 2005. There are some drawbacks, and they have mainly have to do with Team Build, since that area has improved a lot in 2008.

There is a matrix that shows which features won't work in your situation: http://ozgrant.com/2007/10/22/vsts-2005-2008-compatibility-matrix/

  • Fantastic. After some additional research, and a few other questions to a very helpful Microsoft rep, I've decided to proceed with implimenting the trial version Team System and see how things are.
