    Hi all,

I am using SQL Server express edition 2008 with Visual Studio 2005.When I am trying to create a new connection,it gives me the following error "Database schema could not be retrieved for this connection. Please make sure the connection settings are correct and the database is online. This server version is not supported. You have to have Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Beta 2 or Later".

Do I have to change any settings for this connection?

I tried Installing the Service Pack too but it does not work!

Please help as I am not able to go ahead without creating the database.

    Regards,

    SSMurthy

You'll have to install this update for VS2005:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e1109aef-1aa2-408d-aa0f-9df094f993bf&displaylang=en

[EDIT] VS2005 doesn't have "out of the box" support for SQL Server 2008, so Microsoft has made an update to resolve that issue. There are still some limitations, so read carefully the notes on the download page.

    Hi hugonne,

When I try to install the patch it gives me this error msg "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing  or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program.Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch."

I am using VS 2005 Professional Edition and SQL Server 2008 (management studio) express edition(the free download one).

So I do not know if this works.

    Thank u

Are you sure you DO have VS2005 SP1 installed? It will only work on that version. To check it out, in VS, go to Help > About Microsoft Visual Studio

[EDIT] Here are the complete system requirements:

    • Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista or Windows XP Service Pack 3
    • Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1
    • Access to a running instance of SQL Server 2008
    • Any language version of Visual Studio 2005 SP1 Professional Edition or Visual Studio 2005 SP1 Team System Edition

Check this page for more info, and let me know if it works.

Well, in fact it doesn't seem like you have SP for Visual Studio installed. You do have the SP for the .NET Framework 2.0, but that's a different thing. For instance, I have VS2008, and what I see is this:

    Microsoft Visual Studio 2008
    Version 9.0.30729.1 SP

    Get the SP from here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=BB4A75AB-E2D4-4C96-B39D-37BAF6B5B1DC&displaylang=en

And if you have Windows Vista, you might need this as well:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=90E2942D-3AD1-4873-A2EE-4ACC0AACE5B6&displaylang=en

SP1 installation for VS2005 is a very long process, so you'll have to be patient.

    Hi,

Is there a bug fix for the bugs in the above service pack?

I am not able to add tables or View the Table definitions in the "Server Explorer" tab in VS 2005.

Is there a bug fix to resolve this issue?
