  • Yes and no.

You can change your publishing site to be similar to a team site by setting the master page to V4.master and by then disabling the publishing feature and enabling the collaboration feature from the site features menu.

However there are several more features that are enabled for team sites that are not enabled for publishing sites (and vice versa). In practice it's difficult to impractical to activate all of these are there are some hidden ones. So you can get your publishing site to be pretty close and be more than good enough for collaboration work but it's never going to be a perfect version of a team site.

This would get worse if you ever planned to use the site as a template for further sites.

  • Just delete the site. Make a new one using the team site template. SharePoint!

  • Perfect answer from Alex.

I'd like to add that the big, missing bit of functionality would be the ability to change Page Layouts.  Even activating the Publishing features, you'll be missing an ability to change this rather important aspect.  This is worth keeping in mind.

Can you be more specific and advise what you don't like on your publishing site?  The community might be able to save you some time on having to rebuild it.
