Renaming a SQL 2008 R2 Server RRS feed

  • Is it possible to change the name of a SQL 2008 R2 64bit server after installation?

  • In addition to Alberto,

    You can only change default instance of your SQL Server by renaming your computer, however you cannot rename a named instance of SQL server (especially instance name part) without uninstalling and then reinstalling SQL Server.

    sp_dropserver <old_name>
    go
    
    ---Restart SQL Server Service
    
    sp_addserver <new_name>, local
    go
    
    ---Restart SQL server service
