Demote DC, remove it from domain and join to another domain RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi
We have 2 domains (domain A and domain B) with full trust between them.
We need to get reed of domain A and have everything on domain B.
All required user accounts already exist in domain B and we have already migrated most of PCs to domain B so its not an issue. To have users from Domain B to be able to access data on domain A servers we created security groups on domain B and gave permissions to files/folders on domain A file servers (which are domain controllers for domain A as well)
Now we need to replace Domain A servers with domain B server and the question is -
Can we just demote domain A domain controller, remove it from domain A, join it to domain B and keep it as domain B file server so we do not have to create a new file server on domain B and do data migration ?
Has anybody done anything like it before?

    Thanks

  • In case anybody interested - we did just demote each DC in domain A (keeping the last one with all FSMO roles) , rebooted it and joined it to domain B as member server with no issues.
