Problems with areas RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    I have a TFS 2012 Server.

We've defined a lot of new Areas, with child areas as well. In the process, we deleted some, moved others from one parent to another, etc...

At some point this kind of corrupted TFS because we now have issues with Areas in these two situations

    1. When I check the box next to the Project's name in Areas page, I get a "TF400898 An Internal Error Occurred" error.

This produces this entry in the Event viewer:

    2. When we define a new work item, we see an old list of Areas that is not the current one.

I've read all the articles I found on the web about this problem. They all point to installing Visual Studio Update 3 that is supposed to fix problems with Areas. The thing is that the fix was installed on the TFS Server before the problem occured.

I've tried installing it again (did a repair) of the update, part because when I go to the TFS Administrion Console, I don't see the Update 3 in the Installed Updates window. But, I do see it when I go in Windows Control Panel and Installed Programs.

The repair did not fix the problem and I don't know what else to do to fix my Areas.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks,

    Sebastien

  • Hi Sebastien,

    Thanks for your post.

Do you mean that you have upgraded your TFS to TFS 2012 Update 3, but version still show as TFS 2012 Update 2 in TFS Admin Console>>Application Tier panel?

This issue only happened in current team project, or also happened in other team projects(even in another collection)?

This issue seems relate to the installation of your TFS 2012 Server, please run TFS Power Tools Best Practices Analyzer to scan the installation of your TFS 2012 Server.

And you cantry to clean the Cache for TFS 2012 manually(delete the content of the folder only, not the cache folder itself):

    1. Clean the Cache folder on Server machine. The folder path is: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Team Foundation\Web Access\Cache_v11.0. (os: Windows Server 2008 R2)
    2. After cleaned, on Server machine, click Start and select Run… to open the dialog box, then input iisreset.exe and click OK, wait it run completely.

If upgraded to TFS 2012 Update 3 still can’t resolve this issue, I think this issue requires more troubleshooting, if it is urgent issue, I suggest you to contact a Professional Support Service at http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?RDPATH=gp;en-us;offerprophone to gain more support on this case.

  • According to this article kb2835600:

NoteVisual Studio and Team Foundation Server (TFS) installation mechanics are different. The Visual Studio update installs on top of whatever is already installed on the computer. The TFS update is a full layout that replaces whatever is installed on the computer. Before you try to apply the TFS update, make sure that you have a full backup of your current databases. If the TFS update installation fails, you will be unable to restart the update or roll back to the earlier version of TFS without performing a restore procedure.

My understanding is that the is no "TFS Update 3" per se. The only options we have if we want to update TFS Server 2012 to version 2012.3 is to either install "Visual Studio Update 3" that, if installed on a TFS Server, fixes bugs of TFS (according to the same article), that includes the bug I'm experiencing, or reinstall the whole TFS Server using the install package that includes Update 3.

Visual Studio Update 3 was installed early September on the TFS Server, way before my problem occured.

So, if my understanding is right, I should have a TFS Server updated to version 3.

But in the TFS Admin Console>>Application Tier panel, I still only see Update 2 (Tfs2012.Update2).

This error happens in the two projects of my collection (the error when I check the box next to the root area).

I will try all the steps and actions you suggest and post back my results soon.

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

    1.

I ran the TFS Power Tools Best Practices Analyzer.

I have a report with a few issues and 1 error.

Some of them are related to the fact that my installation of TFS Server 2012 was initially an upgrade (Migration Based Upgrade Path according to the guide...) of a TFS Server 2010 originally named "old-server", and that there are still a few traces of my old server name. These issues are:

-Cannot access machine information for old-server

-Cannot acess Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) for server old-server.

-The application tier "old-server" was not scanned. The application tier "old-server" has not connected to Team Foundation Server during the past 72 hours

These are  not real issues because all this works for the new server.

Then the rest of the issues that are related to my new (and current) TFS 2012 server name are:

-No test controllers are registered with team project collection

    -Sharepoint Products is not installed

-SOAP compression is not enabled on the application-tier server for Team Foundation Server

-SQL Server Analysis Services is not installed

-SQL Server Reporting Services is not installed

-Virtual Machine Manager Administrator Console is not installed on the client computer.

I don't see anything that could help solve my problem with areas.

    2.

About your suggestion of clearing the cache on the server, I don't see such a path:

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Team Foundation\Web Access\Cache_v11.0.

  • Hi Sebastien,

    Thanks for your reply.

If you cannot find that Cache_v11.0 folder, please refer to the Clean the Data Cache on Servers section in this document: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms252458.aspx to clean Server cache.

  • As per the article you mentionned, I cleared the cache on the server (the folder was actually empty).

I then cleared the cache on my client computer (the tf worskpaces command...)

That did not fix it. I still have the "TF400898 An Internal Error Occurred" when I click on my Root area of any project.

I am still confused if wether or not I have TFS 2012.3 installed (reference: my Friday, September 27, 2013 2:50 PM post). Except from the TFS admin console (where 2012.2 is shown) or the Control Panel -> Program and Features (where VS Update 3 is shown) is there another way to check if update 3 is really installed on my server?

  • Hi Sebastien,

    Thanks for reply.

I am trying to involve someone familiar with this topic to further look at this issue. There might be some time delay.

    Appreciate your patience.

  • upgrading Visual studio QU3 on TFS 2012 with QU2 won't upgrade your TFS to QU3.

Download TFS 2012 with QU3 from below location and then upgrade

    Thanks,

  • Hi,

Installing TFS 2012 with QU3 over my existing TFS 2012.2 solved the problem.

    Thank you!
