  • In server mode, the ReportViewer exposes all of the rendering extensions installed on the server.  The Word rendering extension is available on the report server beginning with SQL Server 2008.

In local mode, the ReportViewer includes a specific set of rendering extensions.  The Word rendering extension is available in local mode beginning with Visual Studio 2010.

  • Using a server report requires executing the report on a SQL Server Report Server.  This article talks about converting local mode reports for execution on a server - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms252109.aspx
