BCDEDIT.EXE - not recognized as internal or external command? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm running on Windows Server 2008 R2. I was trying to play with the bcdedit.exe command a little bit and got the error that it can not find the executable.

According to searches I've done, it should be in c:\windows\system32. I checked and it is not there. (My PATH does reference that directory though, if I can get it there properly).

I did a search for the bcdedit.exe file downlevel from the c:\windows directory and the only place it appears seems to be a cache (I'm guessing) folder. It's in:

    C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-b..iondata-cmdlinetool_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_e6510234bbcb2a8

Is this only available by installing a role or feature in Windows Server 2008 R2? Any other ideas why it's not there by default?
