Sideloading Windows Phone 8.1 Apps

    Question

  • Hi there, this is my very first time developing a WP app. Can anyone please advise as to how sideload WP 8.1 Apps? What are the concrete steps?

I'm puzzled with the following doc: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn613831.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

    1. I am targeting minimum Windows Phone 8.1 devices.

    2. My development tools: VS 2015 enterprise, OS Windows 10 Home

    3. I have unlocked my personal phone for testing purposes.

My objective is to allow 20-30 users in a private organisation to trial out the app, without publishing to the Windows Store.

What is the best or recommended deployment plans for this?

When we're saying sideloading the app, who can actually do the installation? Can the users install the app themselves without having to unlock the phones, and by themselves?

    Thanks heaps!

  • Hi,

the link you posted seems to be right to understand sideloading, however you can also try this step by step guide:

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/jj874388.aspx

Anyway, if you need to let 20-30 specific people to test your app, you can simply add their Microsoft Accounts in the "Distribution and visibility" options in your Dev Center. Just select the following option and add the email addresses:

"Hide this app and make it available only to the people you specify below, who can download this app on Windows Phone 8.x devices."

In this way your app will not be visible in the Store, but the people you insert in the list will be able to download it.

This is valid for Windows 8.x users, for Windows 10 you have to use promotional codes. Here's the link to the official documentation:

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uwp/publish/set-app-pricing-and-availability#dist_vis

Let me know if my advice were useful.

    Thanks,
