Do all users in [BuiltIn] Administrators need licensing RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a large domain group that has several users that are all local admins on our application tier server. Since they are local admins on that machine they are added to the [BuiltIn] Administrators. These users never use TFS. Are they required to have a TFS CAL or MSDN subscription?  If so how can I remove them without removing the admin privileges from the group.

if you're using TFS 2013 or TFS 2015 than you can control the license using Access Levels and setting default level to StakeHolder which don't require a TFS CAL license. all other users which do require access to TFS need a higher level

    hi Shane

this is not a very good idea.

why do they need admin access to the TFS App Tier ?

if they're only administrating the server than they don't need a TFS CAL.

  • They don't need access.  They are part of a company wide AD group that has admin on most machines and servers for support purposes.  We are now looking to limit admin access.
