Entity Framework, XML, WSDL, newbie RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

This is probably uncommon and general question, but I have spent time online to find the answer and got even more pazzled.

I have been developing Access 2003 application together with SQL Server.  We have now a new functionality, which requests from external 3rd pary application and populates the resulted data back to our database (SQL Server).  This is written in .Net, C#, WSDL, XML.  I have very limited knowledge in this erea, and my task is to enhance/change some functionalities.  Obviously I am faced with something that I have never done before.  And to be honest I don't really understand what is going on when I open .cln file in VS.

What this program does is it communicates to external application by sending some data from our database, the external application sends back the requested data and then the program writes the received data back to our database.  There some .cl .wsdl and .xml files in them.  I suppose its using Entity Framework as I can see some table in design view.

My question is are there any tutorials or online books where I can get some technical knowledge around this.  I am puzzled because the implementation is around different areas such as xml, wsdl, entity framework?   Or there is no simple solution, but to go and study them indivisually?  And if this is the case, which ones do I really need to study?

I know it is a bit unusial question, thank you.

  • Hi Alex Teslin,

Welcome to ado.net managed providers forum.

Don't worry about tast although you have no experience about them. Base my experience,

most of the time the xml is fed to as a data container or the operation contract, and the

web service is a solution that can exposed to word-wide web.

So I think you could have your main focus on the data operation against the database. Tack it easy.

There is a refer to how to build the entity framework application:

I hope that would be help you.

  • Thank you David for your reply. I will go through your links as well currently watching various videos on this. In short, we have already the program implemented by someoneelse, which does all the functionalities. Now, we were asked to change just one field from a table, so that it only requests through webservice only if it's not Null. I know this probably not the major re-work on the existing implementation. As I said I am new to this and don't even know, do I need to change that in edmx file or anywhere else? But I suppose in time will get there eventually. Thanks again for your response.

  • Hi Alex,

    Welcome to comeback.

If you have the fileds update i think you should update the edmx file manually, but if the fileds is not being used you could not to do it.

Or you could open the edmx explore and right click, select the update mode from database,

it will be override the entity automatically.

    Update mode wizard:

I hope that would be help you.

    Have a good day.

  • Thanks for your tips David,

I don't know if you can help me with this:  The copy of .sln file that I have managed to open in VS has some breakpoints in .cn files, which means it's not the copy that is running currently.  But when I try to open the running solution in VS it wouldn't allow me to open any of the files or prejects in Solution Explorer.  And in Properties shows as .exe file.

Any idea on how can I open this solution?

    Thanks again
