FBWF Slow Bootup

  • Hi everyone ,

I have a installed WES7 X64 SP1 on a few target machines , after creating an image frome ICE.

the huge problem is when i enable FBWF on the target machines , the boot time is minimum 10 Minutes .

no other aplication is installed on the machine besides windows.

ive tried on several hardwares , mad several answer files with the same issue .

only c: drive is "locked" , D: is open.

    i followed all Microsoft's recommendations :

    No page file

moved all eventlogs to D: Drive

    Temps Moved to D: drive

    Prefetch + Superfetch - Disabled

    System Restore - Disabled

    Last Acess timestamps - Disabled

FBWF configured with 2-4 Gigs of ram , Prealloaction tried with or without.

    But nothing seems to help.

    Can Anyone advice Please ????

  • Don't have an idea yet but why using FBWF instead of EWF if you want to protect all?

  • Thanks for the advice ,

no i do use EWF thogh it is not my best choice,

FBWF is much more user friendly , and has more CMD choises.

EWF requiers writing C code for all the API's.

if someone has any other advices ill be happy to know.

  • Hi,

i read about your problem with high interest, because we face the same problem with our Windows 7 Embedded installation and fbwf activated. The boot-time is about 6 minutes. Did you find a solution for the problem?

    Thanks in advance.

  • same problem with wes 64bit and FBWF enabled!

My system boot in 35sec. without filter, and 3.30sec with FBWF enabled (1GB FBWF cache, 8GB installed RAM).

I have installed Microsoft performance analiser,  (xperf and xbootmgr),

at first step it seem that SMSS.EXE process wait for something, but I see also that process CSRSS.EXE have hard disk utilization for 200seconds.

    Some one have found solution?

The same image builded in 32bit, same configuration, same board, have not any problem!!!

  • Is this a fully licensed version or is this an evaluation image?

If you have performance monitor in the image, you might want to remove it.

  • Thanks Sean,

I have a full licenced image.

I have installed MPA for monitoring BOOT services.

Today I have solved the problem by sprotecting the directory windows\WinSxS

now the system with FBWF filter boot in 38seconds!

What do you think about my solution?

the WinSxS directory have more than 1GB of data (I think it some fix and updates...), can I cancel them or excluding from filter is the best solution?

  • Hi KostVTEC,

did you managed a solution for your problem? I'm facing the same problem now with WES8 x64. Without FBWF I have a boot time about 30 sec, with FBWF enabled the boot time is about 60 sec.

I have no entries for WinSxS direcotory in the overlay...

@Sean, do you have an idea? There is no problem with EWF, but I have to use FBWF as I need a couple of directories to be writable.

  • I have not really noticed this issue, which is why I asked about the trial versus fully released OS.

  • Hi Sean,

I see now, my OS is not activated anymore, probably because of another SSD used now. I activate it again and try, but I think it was the same as it was activated. It's not a trial, it full version, only not activated now.
There is no problem with EWF, only with FBWF. The next idea I have, was to create a separate partition for all presistent data and protect the system partition with EWF. I hope I can move ProgramData to D: because I have some third-party tool using ProgramData...
