Farm configuration backup/recovery RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,
I'm puzzeled by the official MS documentation about backup/recovery of the farm configuration db.
    In https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee428314.aspx
    it says:
"Backing up the farm will back up the configuration and Central Administration content databases, but these cannot be restored using SharePoint 2013 tools. "
    In https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee428326.aspx
    it says:
"You can use Central Administration to restore a farm’s configuration. ..."

    What is now valid?

(I'm not a Sharepoint admin, but I care about the general backup strategy.)

    Thanks,

    Johannes

  • Hi Johannes,

"Backing up the farm will back up the configuration and Central Administration content databases, but these cannot be restored using SharePoint 2013 tools. "

This above sentence is right that the configuration database and the content database for Central Administration site cannot be restored through SharePoint tools. It is not supported to use built in restore
functionality to restore configuration and Central Administration content databases.

And the other web application content databases and service application databases can be restored in SharePoint tools.

The difference is they are databases for different contents in SharePoint.

A farm’s configuration is settings such as antivirus, IRM, outbound email, and some customizations for SharePoint 2013 and it can be restored through Central Administration.

To restore the configuration and Central Administration content databases, we need to do it manually with SQL server.
