Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 installation encountered a fatal error! RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have recently tried to install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0, but it encountered a fatal error. I am trying to install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 because I have multiple programs that say "To run this application, you must first install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework: v4.0." Now that cant be installed because of what I stated before.

I have tried Alexander Sun's and Irarab suggestions in other threads.

    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/147e0599-0c47-4a96-88a0-7f87861c0052/net-framework-4-installation-failed-with-error-code-0x80070643?forum=netfxsetup

The Log file for the Fatal Error:

  • Hello Andrew.

The error you cite "error code: (0x80070643), "Fatal error during installation." is a generic summary error.

Please provide complete install logs as follows:

Please collect your install logs with this:

    http://aka.ms/vscollect

After you run Collect.exe, you'll find vslogs.cab in your %temp% directory. Please upload vslogs.cab to a public site, like OneDrive, and post the link here.

You can also try this procedure:

    Follow ALL these steps exactly:

Before trying to install .NET Framework 4.0, execute this command from an ELEVATED Command Prompt provided by the .NET Framework Team:

"This issue is likely caused by a bad ACL on assembly\tmp folder. After installing updates, the ACL propagates to installed assembly folders in both 4.0 & legacy GAC.  If those updates were installed by WU or another user, the propagated ACL will prevent install of the same assembly by the current user.

A work around would be to reset the ACL on GAC dirs.

    for /F %D in ('dir %WINDIR%\assembly %WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\assembly /s /b /a:d') do takeown /F %D && icacls %D /reset /T"

After running that command, follow these steps:

    Please follow these instructions exactly:

    1. Download a fresh copy of the standalone installer for .NET Framework 4.0:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17718

    2. Also, clear your %temp% directory and disable your AV software.

The %temp% directory is a reference to the Temp folder associated with the current user. To clear it, do the following:

Sign on to your system with the Administrator user account you will use to run the installer. Click the Start Orb and type %temp% in the search box. The search results will show the Temp folder you want. Click on the Temp folder to open it in Windows Explorer, then delete the entire contents.

    3. Run the standalone installer from step 1 As Administrator.

Note: Just using an administrator account is NOT enough. To activate full privileges, you must right-click the installer, then select Run as administrator.

If the install fails, provide complete install logs as follows:

Please collect your install logs with this:

    http://aka.ms/vscollect

After you run Collect.exe, you'll find vslogs.cab in your %temp% directory. Please upload vslogs.cab to a public site, like OneDrive, and post the link here.

  • Hi Andrew,

    Does pvdg42's suggestion help you?

In addition, I found that you get the "1603" error code in your log file, to troubleshoot this error, please navigate to the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer node, and make sure MsiExecCA32 with value C:\Windows\syswow64\msiexec.exe and MsiExecCA64 with value C:\Windows\system32\msiexec.exe

See the Error Code: 0x80070643 part of this blog for further information: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/varungupta/archive/2010/06/22/troubleshooting-net-framework-4-install-failures.aspx

    Thanks.

  • Vicky,

I have tried pvdg42's link. None of them were help full as

MsiExecCA32 and MsiExecCA64  have had the right directories in my registry.  The link you just provided did not help either.

  • Hi Andrew,

If you are getting an error 0x80070643, then I suggest you to try the steps listed in this KB article.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976982

if it does not work, then try

    - Saved the exe. setup file of Microsoft .Net Framework,
    - Through the Disk Cleanup (Start>Program>Accessories>System Tools), delete temp folder, Microsoft error reports, Recycle Bin and etc not essential stuff.
    - Restarted Computer
    - Run .Net framework setup exe. file as administrator.

and have you considered your GPO policy? check http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/how-to-fix-installation-is-forbidden-by-system/d86f95f5-3df9-4780-afac-10e2c598843a

  • Jenny,

Thanks for the advice but sadly it did not work. I might just end up re-installing windows. I did not want to have to go to that but no one on the internet can seem to help. The Repair Tool gave me a bunch of logs. Should I go to these and give you the logs?

Also Microsoft Framework 3.5.1 can not seem to update. I have 10 updates waiting to be installed but they can not because of this Framework 3.5.1 update.

Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems (KB2836943)

    Installation date: ‎5/‎12/‎2014 9:11 PM

    Installation status: Failed

    Error details: Code 80070643

    Update type: Important

Install this update to resolve issues in Windows. For a complete listing of the issues that are included in this update, see the associated Microsoft Knowledge Base article for more information. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

The websites it listed did not seem help either. Nothing can be installed because of this update. I have tried getting rid of Framework 3.5.1 but it wont let me uninstall it because 3.5.1 does not show up.
