Answers

  • Cosmos is Microsoft's internal Big Data system (and ecosystem) and Scope is its query language.

Data Lake Store and Data Lake Analytics are public Azure services. We've taken our experiences and learnings from building and operating Cosmos and put them toward creating these two Azure services. Although Data Lake Store and Data Lake Analytics have their origins in Cosmos and indeed some of the code is common between the two, they are distinct services running with different capabilities.

    Key differences

    • Cosmos is a single service that delivers storage and analytics,  Data Lake offers these as separate services in Azure
    • Cosmos is designed for the needs of a single "customer": Microsoft. Data Lake is designed to work for multiple tenants - providing secure isolation of customer data and workloads.
    • Cosmos is built completely on internal Microsoft technologies. Data Lake Analytics and Data Lake Store are built on open source technologies such as YARN and WebHDFS
