Where is the cubes data stored? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Where is the cubes data stored?  For example; the database is stored in the defult location c:\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\databasename.mdf, which has the lowest levels dimensional and fact tables, but when a cube is "processed", where that data is stored?

Do we have to backup other files beside databasename.mdf and databasename.ldf?

    Thank you,

    A

  • Hi,

there is a default location, which you can override for some AS objects. Unlike sql engine, data is stored in xml format, which you can edit, if you know what to do. There are plenty of files and structure is completely different from sql engine (with data and log files).

    C:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\Data

  • You should do the backup, of course. Metadata is mostly stored in xml files, then there are key stores, string stores, attributes stores and many others. Analysis Services 2005 book describe them in great detail, if you are interested.

  • Hi Radim,

Thank you for the info.  Would you suggest to backup the folder you indicated?

    C:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\Data

Do the XML files contain data, aggregations, etc.? or just metadata, configuration information?

  • Yes just backup the data folder (by default, it's C:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\Data, or check your C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\Config\msmdsrv.ini for the value under DataDir).

The data folder contains more than just .xml files. Backing the whole folder up would back up all the databases on your AS server.

    Thanks,

    Chu
