What are "facade" reference assemblies?

I'm looking for some information about what the "facade" reference assemblies are all about. I see lots of the .DLLs under the "facade" folder for reference assemblies for every different version of the .NET Framework. If anyone can explain their purpose that would be great. Links that explain what they are would be just as good.
