Renaming Domain Account - Options RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am researching on renaming SQL Server user accounts from a soon to retired domain name to a newer domain name, say [domain_old\user] to [domain_new\user]. ALTER LOGIN  [domain_old\user] with name=[domain_new\user] does not work because Windows SID for [domain_old\user] is different than Windows SID for [domain_new\user]. I am concluding that I would have to somehow extract all the permissions granted to [domain_old\user] and then apply them onto [domain_new\user].

Please guide if I am on the wrong path.

    Hello Jeelani,

Because of the different SID, a simple renaming of the accounts won't work. You have to add all the new Domain accounts to SQL Server security.
