Query for "victoria" does not return the Australian state RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm using the Bing Maps Locations REST API to geocode locations in Australia, and I ran into a problem.  This query:

    http://dev.virtualearth.net/REST/v1/Locations?query=victoria&key=[my key]

Does not return the Australian state of Victoria.  This is surprising because queries for the other states work as expected, and searching for Victoria's abbreviation (vic) works as well.

I'm guessing this is a bug or quirk in the database that Bing Maps is using for geocoding.  Is this something Microsoft could fix?  If not, I'd appreciate any suggestions for a workaround.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  • There are several reasons for this. The first one is that a culture code has not been specified. As such the service defaults to US English which results in US locations having a higher priority. Another issue is that Victoria is a very commonly used word in addresses. There are several cities, a couple states, and countless streets with this name. You should add some country information to narrow the search, such as AU for Australia. For example:

    http://dev.virtualearth.net/REST/v1/Locations?query=victoria,%20au&key=[mykey
