SMB Communication error RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Team,

I was reading some other threads related to this issue but nothing has helped.

We have an internal tool which use SMB to verify if the server is up but it is not working for our Domain controllers. SMB doesn't log anything in the event viewer, see below what I get from our internal log ?  Is there a way to enable more SMB logging or events?

        Checked by: smb

Other Text: Inappropriate ioctl for device
       Checker TID: 920
             State: timeout
     System Checks: 5
       Max Timeout: 33 seconds

The checks employed by our internal tool implement the very first packet used by the Windows networking protocol (known as Server Message Block or SMB) and the packet is used to start any negotiation with a Windows system regardless of anonymous access being enabled or not. Thus, the check employed by our tool uses part of the SMB protocol even before authentication is considered by the Server.

    any help would be appreciated.

    thanks.

Note: Monitored servers are Windows 2008 R2 and all of them are domain controllers.
