  • Hi Rabeel,

We can use the following steps to find SQL Server instance name:

    1. Open SQL Server Configuration Manager (SSCM) from Start – > All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2012 -> Configuration Tools.
    2. In the SSCM, click SQL Server Services under SQL Server Configuration Manager (Local), you could find list like SQL Server (InstanceName).

Then with SQL Server Management Studio, please change the server name as:

    Computer Name + ‘\’  + instance name,

for example: Rabeel\MSQLESRVER (I assume your computer name is Rabeel)

You can also refer to the following link:

If there is any error message, please post them here.

  • Once connected to Instance you can confirm your Instance name by simple SELECT Query.

    SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('InstanceName')

  • There is no difference between SQL 2012 and SQL 2008/2005 in this regard.

You say you cannot connect. Are you trying to connect locally or from a remote computer?
