SMTP Virtual Server Must be Manually Started After Restarting Machine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am testing our web application on a Windows Web Server 2008 machine.  The application uses the Windows SMTP server to send email.  I have found that every time I restart the machine the SMTP server does not start and I must use the IIS 6.0 Manager to start the SMTP Virtual Server.  There is nothing in any of the logs to indicate that the server tried to start and failed.  Our production Window 2003 machines don't have this problem, the SMTP Virtual Server starts when the machine starts.  How do I get the SMTP Virtual Server to start automatically when the Windows 2008 machine restarts?

  • The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service is set to start manually by default. Set the service to start automatically (Start -> Administrative Tools -> Services) and you should be all set.
