Adding Disk to VM does affect the produciton? RRS feed

  • Hi

    I would like to add 2 extra disk to our production VM. i am worried does it affect the production? do i need to restart the VM after adding disk?

  • Hi Muthu,

    Yes, you can add data disks to a virtual machine at any time, by attaching the disk to the virtual machine. 

    Please follow the article here in order to see the steps that you need to take to attach the disk to the VM.

    Also, remember to initialize and format the disk from within Windows Server Disk Management in order to use the disk !

    It shouldn't affect production, so it's safe to add a disk or more to an existing running VM in production.

    The VM doesn't need be restarted after adding a disk either, after that you have added a disk you can go straight into the Disk Management inside the VM and initialize the disk > create a new partition and you're done!
