installing .NET framework in XP RRS feed

  • Question

  • automatic Windows updates has repeatedly failed to install the latest version of .NET framework updates.  I'm running XP service pack 3.

Other knowledge base articles advised me to remove older versions of .NET and re-install.  Now I'm at version 1.1.4322 (according to regedit).

Attempts to download and install 3.5 tell me that I need to install .NET 2.0 first.

attempts to download and install 2.0 tell me that installer doesn't have permissions to install.  I get this error whether i run as "me" or as "admin" on my machine.  (I'm at my wits' end.)

    automated updates my a**.

  • Hi wmferrell63,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

First I'll clarify details about .NET 3.5 and .NET 2.0.

    .NET 2.0 SP1 and .NET 3.0 SP1 is a base to have .NET 3.5,

    .NET 2.0 SP2 and .NET 3.0 SP2 is a base to have .NET 3.5 SP1.

So please see here of .NET 3.5 SP1

While install .NET 3.5, it will install .NET 2.0 for you too if you don't have it.

For your issue of updates, you may need to upgrade to .NET 3.5 SP1. So please use the full package listed on that page.

But I see that you are unable to install .NET 2.0 with permission error, could you please follow MVP's suggestion to clear %temp% file and disable AV software?

If you have done this and still have error, we need more information which should be collect yourself:

Try to collect logs with the collect tool MVP mentioned here:(Installation error log)

Also, try to use this tool to verify .NET installation on your OS:(.NET verification log)

Combined with this, we can help you repair .NET issue on your OS.

Please feel free to show us your updates.
