How can I change the language of command line tools?

    Question

  • I have a Polish localized Windows system. I've installed Visual Studio Community Edition 2017. After installation, Visual Studio installed itself and runs fine, but it's translated to Polish language. The problem is that the translation is so disasterous, I often don't understand what error logs mean, or what easy concepts mean (like: "Nie można otworzyć pliku dołącz" for "Can't open include file" -- sorry, but "dołącz" is a wrong word here).

I've changed the language of Visual Studio itself. It displays english error messages and everything is fine. But when I open command line tools (or use 'vcvasrsall.bat') and try to use msbuild.exe, it still displays errors in Polish localization. I would like those errors to be in english.

So, is it possible to switch the language of command line tools from Polish to English?

  • Okay, I've removed the localization directories from this directory:

    c:\program files (x86)\microsoft visual studio\2017\community\vc\tools\msvc\14.10.25017\bin\hostx64\x64

(I had directories 1033 and 1045, I think 1033 is english localization, but I've removed them both)

    Everything is readable again.

I'm 100% sure this post will be lost, but I'll write it anyway: change your Polish localization "experts", they don't know what they're doing.

This one is good: "/J domyślnym typem znaku jest typ bez znaku"

And this actually obfuscates the option list, and the user doesn't know what options to type, because they've changed the option strings:

/errorReport:option zgłaszaj wewnętrzne błędy kompilatora do firmy Microsoft
        brak - nie wysyłaj raportu
monit - monituj o natychmiastowe wysłanie raportu
kolejka - przy kolejnym zalogowaniu administratora, monituj o wysłanie raportu (domyślnie)
        send - wyślij raport automatycznie

There are no 'brak' or 'monit' values for /errorReport.

This one I don't even understand: "/C nie dziel komentarzy"

And this one is a gem, they clearly don't know what they're dealing with:

/clr[:option] kompiluj dla środowiska uruchomieniowego języka wspólnego, gdzie opcją jest:
pure - produkuj IL - tylko plik wyjściowy (brak natywnego kodu wykonywalnego)
safe - produkuj IL-tylko plik weryfikowalny plik wyjściowy
initialAppDomain - włącz początkowe zachowanie domeny aplikacji Visual C++ 2002
        noAssembly - nie produkuj zestawu

Fix this if you want, I don't care, but you should care.
